Situation

We needed a new coffee table for our living room. I had recently been enjoying designing furniture from scratch and wanted to try building a piece directly from a digital mockup in Figma.

Task

Plan, design, and build a coffee table to match a Figma mockup using only two 2x4 sheets of plywood.

Action

  • Started by looking at existing coffee table designs for inspiration.
  • Once I had a rough idea of the shape and materials, I laid out the plywood pieces in Figma to ensure everything would fit on two 2x4’ sheets.
  • I sketched the exact shape and dimensions needed for each piece in Figma.
  • Printed a scaled-down version of the table design on paper to create a small paper replica.
  • Cut out the paper pieces and assembled them to verify the design and proportions.
  • Transferred the full-size design directly from Figma to the plywood and cut out each piece using a table saw.
  • Glued everything together and used simple brackets to attach the legs to the tabletop.
  • Sanded and finished with a clear coat to protect the wood.

Result
